Why fit winter tyres?
Winter tyres provide increased safety as soon as the temperature drops below 7°C.
Is it worth fitting winter tyres? The answer is simple: Yes! Only winter tyres can provide a high level of safety at low temperatures and they outperform summer tyres as soon as the temperature falls below 7°C.
This is achieved using a special rubber compound that is highly flexible in cold conditions. In contrast to summer tyre compounds, winter tyres remain elastic and provide traction even at low temperatures. This helps to guarantee short braking distances and optimal traction when cornering, particularly on wet road surfaces.
The superiority of winter tyres becomes even more evident in snowy conditions. A number of fine cuts called sipes provide hundreds of tiny teeth that bite into the snow-covered surface and ensure increased traction.
Beware of cutting costs: The risk of being involved in an accident is six times higher in winter than in summer. And accidents can be expensive in countries like Germany where, even if you are not at fault for an accident in winter, you could still be faced with a 20% bill for joint responsibility if your vehicle is fitted with summer tyres. Legislators in Finland and Sweden have taken this a step further and winter tyres are a legal requirement for all drivers.
Some insurers even provide discounts for drivers who fit winter tyres.
