25 hours of racing fun at Spa27.06.2007
Hanover, June 2007. Anybody can last 24 hours, whether at Daytona, Le Mans or the Nürburgring. With the Funcup, however, the race goes on an extra hour. On 7 July 2007, the Uniroyal Funcup starts its 25-hour endurance race at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. This amazing race spectacular will feature an anticipated 150 Funcup cars, with teams able to nominate up to eight drivers per vehicle. Brief recap: On 2 and 3 June at the Zolder circuit in Belgium, 64 Funcups from Belgium and Germany participated in an exhilarating six-hour race in which Stoll Motorsport took the lead, finally taking most points for Germany. The championship is still a very close-run thing; in the upcoming Spa-Francorchamps 25-hour endurance race, points will be awarded both at the halfway point and the end of the race, which could decide the outcome of the entire championship.
For the funmotorsports team, headed up by Armin Holz, there was much work to be done after Zolder. For one thing, there was Funcup race damage to repair; then, over the weekend of 7 to 10 June, it was time for the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in Germany, which also involved exhibiting the Funcup cars to excited race fans at race days in Adenau and at the Nordschleife track. And funmotorsports still has more work to do before the big event at Spa; on 4 July, the team will be returning to Zolder to provide a Funcup taster session for those with an interest in the sport. More taster sessions, where you learn all about the cars and have a go behind the wheel, are taking place throughout the year. For information about dates, costs and the taster session experience, visit http://www.funcup.eu/. The Spa race event schedule is as follows:
Admission is free for spectators. Various entertainment activities will be provided during the race, especially for children. The Volkswagen tent will once again play host to Kids’ World, and there will also be live music, appearances by the Belgian radio station Radio Contact and additional attractions provided by m&m. One of the highlights of Saturday night will be an impressive firework display. The Uniroyal FunCup is a brand cup held in Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. In Germany the 760-kg, 130-HP racing cars can be driven by anybody. The plastic vehicle body – a VW Beetle look-alike – conceals inexpensive mass-produced components contained in a specially designed tube-type chassis frame. A completely new vehicle costs around 33,000 euros. Interested parties should check out http://www.funcup.eu/. Starting in 1895, the Belgian rubber goods manufacturer Englebert produced tyres for Continental AG and other companies. After merging with US Rubber in 1958, the company changed its name to Uniroyal Englebert. Uniroyal, the inventor of the rain tyre, has been a European brand of Hanover-based Continental AG since 1979. The Continental Corporation is a leading automotive supplier of brake systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics, tyres and technical elastomers. In 2006 the corporation realised sales of EUR 14.9 billion. It currently has a worldwide workforce of around 87,000 employees.
